The Storyteller
Materials and tools for constructing narratives
Frances Dickens, Kirstin Lewis
The Story Factory is an innovative handbook that aims to help children write creatively by focusing on 12 elements of storytelling: genre, characters, emotions and feelings, dimensions, dialogue and sounds, speed, settings, tactile, olfactory and gustatory aspects, colors, objects, chronological time and weather. Each section consists of an introduction, a series of writing "tips," photocopiable storyboards and interactive pages, all accompanied by fun color illustrations. Aimed at the 4- to 11-year-old age group, the book has a clear graphic structure and a set of pictures that make it suitable even for individuals with poor oral and written language skills; a specific introduction aimed at older children allows them to work independently. The Storybook Factory provides a motivating and flexible resource for teachers, both curricular and support, both to develop pupils' vocabulary and writing skills and to help those learning Italian as a second language. For parents, older siblings, uncles, grandparents, and children themselves, it provides ideas and materials for having fun inventing and writing stories.
