Developing Relationships in Autistic Disorders Volume 2
Modified basic activities and self-regulation, group interaction and creativity
Steven E. Gutstein, Rachelle K. Sheely
Developing relationships and establishing true and lasting relationships with others requires appropriate learning pathways and activities, especially in individuals with autistic disorders. This work is structured in two volumes and was created with the specific intent of helping children, adolescents and adults with pervasive developmental disorders, autism and Asperger's syndrome to develop and enhance fundamental skills such as relating in social settings, behavior regulation, reciprocity in conversation and synchrony in actions. In this second volume, designed for children who are already quite old, adolescents and adults, more than 150 activities have been collected that span the entire span of social and emotional development. The exercises presented are divided into six levels and 24 stages and are organized into thematic areas, including: paying attention, making contact, coordination, variation, collaboration, improvisation, imagination, controlling emotionality, conversations, discovering inwardness, family roots and friendships. The easy-to-follow book uses simple, straightforward language; many of the instructions provided proceed step-by-step in explaining the proposed activities so that laypeople, such as parents, as well as teachers, special educators and therapists, can do them. The book also has handy appendices that make it possible to identify and connect by cross-reference the activities and their objectives so that the learner's progress can be easily assessed.
