The basic activities: paying attention, social reference and collaboration
Steven E. Gutstein, Rachelle K. Sheely
Developing relationships and establishing true and lasting relationships with others requires appropriate learning methods, especially in individuals with autistic disorders. This work was created with the specific intent of helping children, adolescents and adults with pervasive developmental disorders, autism and Asperger's syndrome to develop and enhance fundamental skills such as relating in social settings, behavior regulation, reciprocity in conversation and synchrony of actions. The proposed pathway is divided into six levels in two volumes: the first dedicated to young children, the second aimed at older children, adolescents and adults. The work is organized into several thematic areas, including: friendship, attention, involvement, collaboration, verbal and nonverbal communication, synchronism, creativity, emotion, flexibility and humor. This volume, which contains the first 3 levels, is for children aged 2 to 9 years and offers simple games and exercises combined with clear, verifiable goals to make it easy to assess progressive improvements.
