The Geographer's Briefcase
Making and unmaking to understand and think. A collection of useful materials to guide elementary school children, on a fascinating journey of discovery of the world through play and manipulation of concrete materials. The pedagogical thought of reference is that of teacher Alberto Manzi (writer of Orzowei and host of "It's Never Too Late") who suggested to always make sure "that the child can do."
How to Use the Briefcase: Discover maps, imagine land development, code and decode signs and information, design an airport or have fun with isohypses, solve a few mysteries, decipher geographic proverbs. And still understand a volcano, learn how to use scales and legends, discover how many stories a compass rose can hide. These are some of the activities we offer to get little boys and girls excited about the world we live in.
The workbook offers numerous examples of activities that can be done with children. Some of them involve the use of the double-sided board with symbol tiles.
Of course, children can have fun imagining new stories, different from those proposed in the workbook, thus inventing new maps as well.
