The Line of 20 New Edition
Analog method for learning calculus (manual + plastic instrument)
Camillo Bortolato
The 20-line is the tool, alternative to colored rulers, for learning numbers and calculus in elementary school and in the preparation phase carried out in kindergarten.
It enhances the intuitive abilities of each child, who is born - according to recent studies - with a strong inclination toward numeracy and comes to school loaded with information about numbers and a desire to learn.
Compared with colored rulers that presuppose a long course of instruction, the 20 line can be used immediately, with joy and amazement.
It allows them to operate within 20 right away by carrying out addition and subtraction, which before being algorithms of the discipline are actions of everyday life that have the simple meaning of "adding" and "taking away."
Pupils recognize the tool as a representation of their own hands, and no explanations are needed, because hands are the natural tool that enabled the evolution of mental calculation.
In the text, alongside a brief guide to the workbook, a complete teaching itinerary is presented for carrying out the first grade program including calculus skills and arithmetic problems, again using the analog method.
The line of 20 is especially recommended for pupils having difficulty in calculating by mind and proves very useful with those who are visually or hearing impaired, as well as with foreign pupils with language difficulties. It may also prove an ideal support for parents who wish to experience their child's early learning within a framework of preschool enhancement of his or her full potential.
