Theory and practice in education for blind and visually impaired pupils
Marina Pinelli, Chiara Bonfigliuoli
The education of a visually impaired individual requires a thorough understanding not only of the deficit, with its specific peculiarities and implications, but also of the related needs, methodologies and aids. This need is met by the present volume, which adopts a developmental perspective, thus considering the developmental tendencies of children and young people who are blind or visually impaired, both because they appear unique to the disability and cannot be compared with normal tendencies in terms of the presence/absence of certain abilities or skills and because such a perspective allows a proactive attitude to be taken, especially from the educational point of view. The text - clear, systematic and usable - consists of three parts. In the first, "The Theory," research on language, motor and social skill development is presented. For each of these three areas, the second part, "The Research," reports some experimental contributions that highlight the possibility of integrating educational activities and research objectives applied to the contexts of visual impairment. Finally, the third part, "The Practice," gives more concrete and expendable form to the proposed theoretical considerations by providing useful insights for practitioners who work daily with pupils who are blind or visually impaired.
